MASTER ANALYSE ET POLITIQUE
ÉCONOMIQUES
ECONOMIC
HISTORY
2010-2011
Pierre-Cyrille
Hautcoeur
updated January 19th, 2011
The class is held in the Pavillon Néerlandais, every
Tuesday afternoon from
November 30th, 2010, from 1h30 to 4h30 PM.
Seminar
in economic history : you are all welcome to participate the
economic history seminar at the PSE, room 8; it is held on mondays at
5:00 PM, twice a
month, starting October 19th. Two participations will allow you to
compensate one absence at
the class. The program is available here.
Presentation
The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to
economic history for economists. I start with some remarks on
methodology and historiography (the history of economic history as a
field). I then present a few major debates which have structured the
discipline and which had a major impact on our understanding of today's
world.
The course is based on a number of articles, which can be accessed
through this page (at least
when you are on the Campus: links to J-Stor cannot be accessed from
your home). Most of
them are research papers, which
understanding sometimes requires some contextual information. This can
be found in the relevant chapters of major syntheses or textbooks, of
which I provide a list at the end of the page. The list is incomplete yet and
will be completed during the week before each class.
For each class, all participants are required to read at least one
paper, and to send me by e-mail
(hautcoeur(((at)))pse.ens.fr) the day before the class a one-page
summary or comment of that paper. Your text must be directly in the
e-mail (no attachment please) ; it must start with the title of the
paper discussed (also to be mentioned as subject of the mail) and
be signed with your
name.
The course evaluation will be based on presence and participation
(based on the
readings) at both the lectures and small classes (50%) and an essay
(50%).
